When to Go
March-April: The river is full, mist hangs in the gorges, and temperatures are 15-25 C. October-November: Clear skies, golden light on red cliffs, and the autumn tea harvest. Summer (June-August) is hot and humid at 30-38 C but the river remains cool. Winter (December-February) has the fewest tourists and atmospheric mist but some trails may be slippery.
How to Get There
High-speed train to Wuyishan North Station (3h from Shanghai, 4h from Xiamen, 5h from Hangzhou), then 30-minute taxi to the scenic area. Wuyishan Airport (WUS) has flights from Beijing, Shanghai, and Xiamen. The park operates shuttle buses between all major sites. Most hotels cluster in the resort area near the south entrance.

How difficult is the Tianyou Peak climb? +
Moderate — 848 stone steps over roughly 30-40 minutes. The steps are well-maintained with handrails. The summit platform fits about 50 people and offers a 360-degree panorama of the Nine-Bend River below. Sunrise here is the most popular photo opportunity in Wuyi. Start climbing 45 minutes before sunrise to secure a good position.
Can I visit Wuyi as a day trip? +
Possible from Wuyishan City but you will miss the best experiences. A proper visit takes 2 days: Day 1 for Tianyou Peak + Nine-Bend River, Day 2 for the tea gardens + Water Curtain Cave + Dahongpao Scenic Area. The park is large and shuttle buses between sites add transit time.
Is Wuyi good for children? +
Moderately good. The bamboo raft ride is family-friendly (children 1.2m+ allowed with life jackets). Tianyou Peak is manageable for fit children 8+. The tea gardens and flat river walks are suitable for all ages. The main challenge is the heat in summer and the amount of walking between shuttle bus stops.
What should I buy as a souvenir? +
Wuyi rock tea (yancha) is the essential purchase. Da Hong Pao, Rou Gui (Cinnamon), and Shui Xian (Narcissus) are the three famous varietals. Buy from shops in the resort area rather than tourist stalls inside the park. Expect to pay CNY 100-500 for decent quality. The tea is roasted over charcoal, giving it a distinctive mineral-smoky flavor unlike any other Chinese tea.
How does Wuyi compare to Guilin? +
Both feature river gorges and dramatic peaks, but the experiences differ. Guilin’s Li River cruise is longer (4-5 hours) through broader karst plains. Wuyi’s Nine-Bend River is intimate, winding through narrow gorges with cliffs directly overhead. Wuyi adds tea culture that Guilin lacks. If you have time for both, they complement each other perfectly.
